Concrete Maintenance and Cleaning Guide

If your concrete, garage or driveway floor has become dirty and patched, you can take care of these temporary stains in various ways. You will need a power washer, tri sodium phosphate or TSP, scrub brush, kitty litter, broom, 5% solution of muriatic acid, work gloves, safety glasses, detergent and laundry bleach.

Clean Up the Concrete: Before getting rid of stains, vacuum or sweep the place to make sure that there are no loose dirt particles on it. Use a power washer to tackle the dirt and grime from concrete surfaces. A hot water power washer can be better. It is available on rent and helps clean common spills of grease or oil. Using Xtreme Polishing Concrete Floors can eliminate the staining altogether.

Grease Staining: Grease and oil stains can be removed with TSP or scrubbing powder that is mixed in warm water. All you need to do is give a thorough scrub. You can even spread some TSP powder on the mark, allowing it to stay a few days before sweeping. Stubborn stains can at times be removed by saturating the space with mineral spirits and spreading TSP or cat litter on top. Sweep up the place a couple of days later.

If the stain is too tough to remove, you can pour a 5% mixture of muriatic acid right over the stain and scrub it using an old push broom. Since the acid creates unpleasant smoke, make sure that the place is well-ventilated. Wear safety gloves, glasses and long pants. Rinse the place intricately using fresh water to eliminate the acid.

Mildew: Take an ounce of laundry detergent, some TSP and a quart of laundry bleach. Brush the solution on the mildew stained region on the floor. After a while, rinse the place carefully with cold clean water.
